Summer travel - are you gut ready?

As the holidays approach, preparations are being made, but have you considered the health of your gut? With changes in water, food, and exposure to viruses in airports and planes, what measures can you take to protect and support yourself?

Given the crucial role our digestive system plays in maintaining our health and well-being, here are some tips for staying healthy while traveling.

The Gut pack

Now when I travel, I always bring my supplements because I anticipate consuming more food and drinks than I do at home - after all, it's a holiday time and time to treat ourselves! These are the factors I keep in mind.

When it comes to my gut health, I rely on a probiotic that I know is effective for me. I always keep one handy that I know is compatible with my microbiome, although there are many options available. I take supplements that are beneficial for soothing an upset stomach, such as slippery elm (known for relieving nausea and diarrhea), substances that help reduce inflammation in the gut like marshmallow and gamma or activated charcoal, and remedies for indigestion that may arise from consuming rich foods, such as betaine or betaine and pepsin. In case of constipation, there are various supplements like black walnut, berberine, and grapefruit that aid in natural bowel movement.

As with any kinesiology treatment, it is advisable to book a treatment first to determine what best suits your microbiome, as each person's system is unique.

The other essentials?

Silver shield and silver gel

This fluid is excellent for treating bacterial and viral infections. I apply the gel on cuts and use it on the face to prevent skin eruptions caused by sunscreens.

A daily multi vitamin and a vitamin C

For the first sign of any low immunity or starting to feel unwell I have vitamin C to hand. I always take at least 3 on the days of travel at an airport.

Milk thistle

Fabulous for supporting the liver with the excess of drink and rich foods. There are other liver supplements available but I find milk thistle a good general one for the the family.

Hydration

Staying hydrated during your holiday is extremely crucial. I make it a habit to carry my water bottle everywhere so that I can top up throughout the day, ensuring that I consume at least 2-3 liters daily. Nowadays, there are many more water fountains accessible, which also helps in reducing plastic consumption. The combination of heat, alcohol, and travel can be quite draining on the body, and maintaining proper hydration will enhance your holiday experience.

Those nasty parasites!

If you return with more than you left with, experiencing symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea, please get in touch. There are numerous parasites that can enter your body and make you feel very sick. We can check for parasites in your system and then focus on cleansing the gut to restore balance and it may be that they are not there but we can support the symptoms you are feeling and where in the digestive system things are unhappy.

Enjoy your holidays - you have worked hard for these moments. Make great memories and top up that vitamin D!
